Overview

Victoria Falls is the world's largest waterfall by the combined measurement of height and width — and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Known by the local Kololo people as Mosi-oa-Tunya — 'the smoke that thunders' — the falls stretch 1,708 metres across the Zambezi River and plunge up to 108 metres into the gorge below, producing a continuous column of spray that is visible from 50 kilometres away.

The falls sit on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, accessible from both sides with different perspectives and different experiences. The Zimbabwe side offers the most comprehensive views of the full width of the falls through a series of viewing points along the rainforest path; the Zambian side provides access to the Knife Edge Bridge — a suspension bridge above the boiling pot directly below the falls — and to Livingstone Island during high water season, where adventurous visitors swim in the Devil's Pool on the very lip of the falls.

The surrounding towns of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) serve as the adrenaline adventure capital of Southern Africa. The Zambezi River below the falls offers world-class Grade 5 white-water rafting through a dramatic basalt gorge; the Victoria Falls Bridge is the site of one of the world's most famous bungee jumps; and helicopter, microlight, and fixed-wing flights over the falls provide an aerial perspective that reveals the true scale of this extraordinary place.

Victoria Falls is almost always included in broader Southern Africa itineraries — as a gateway destination before or after a Botswana Delta safari, a Hwange game drive, a Zambia walking safari, or a South Africa combination. It is rarely visited in isolation, which is exactly as it should be — the falls are extraordinary, and the surrounding region deepens and contextualises the experience.

Signature Experiences

Best Time to Visit

Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. At peak flow (February–May), the volume of water is so great that mist obscures many views — you are drenched within seconds, and the scale is simply overwhelming. The low-water season (September–December) offers clearer views of the rock face and the possibility of swimming in Devil's Pool. July–September balances reasonable flow with clear viewing and is the most popular window for combining Victoria Falls with a Botswana or Zambia safari.

Practical Tips

The KAZA UniVisa (USD 50) covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia and is available on arrival at Victoria Falls Airport. Visitors should carry USD cash — most tourist facilities accept it directly. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended. The Zimbabwean side is generally considered safer and better managed for tourism, while the Zambian side offers a more relaxed atmosphere.
